TOTAL SITE ANALYSIS
SAVES $5 MILLION PER YEAR

Objectives

Reduction of the process energy demands and optimisation of the site utility system were the goals of the Total Site project completed at the Hüls site in Marl in 1998.

The site is highly complex in terms of both the number of process plants and the number of different operating companies based there. The difficulty of the task faced by the project team was increased as an earlier study aimed at identifying energy saving projects had recently been completed resulting in a belief that further savings were not possible.

Project Details

During the eight month study, a joint team of engineers from Linnhoff March and Hüls Infracor applied ‘state-of-the-art’ pinch techniques using the SuperTarget software to rigorously assess the potential for energy savings and to identify project opportunities. These opportunities were then presented as a RoadMap describing the possible future investment strategy routes for the site.

"The combination of pinch experience from Linnhoff March engineers with process engineering experience from Hüls engineers was the key to success. This included not only the development of numerous economic pinch projects but also a substantial transfer of Total Site technology to Hüls Infracor engineers."
